LETTER TO THE EDITOR NZ Herald 17.6.06 Dear Sir My huge concern as I read the report on Legal Party Pills [BZP and TFMPP] released this week is that by making these drugs legal we are further normalising recreational drug use here in NZ. We are making it seem OK to take a speed-based derivative. Young people who would never have considered taking an illegal drug are now being introduced to this form of "acceptable high" and some will go on to harder drugs. Indeed, this survey showed that 13% did and that 84% used these drugs in combination with other substances, especially alcohol. Alcohol and Drug counsellors I talk to are saying that legal party pills are providing a 'lethal cocktail' for our young people - enabling them to stay awake longer, drink more and smoke more. These drugs were only introduced in the year 2000 and it will take another one or two years before we know of their addictive potential. This generation are the guinea pigs in an experiment that could go horribly wrong. Jennie Milne How to DRUG PROOF YOUR KIDS Focus on the Family NZ
